How to Prepare Your Shopify Store for the Holiday Season

The holiday season does not actually start in December.
It starts when someone is lying in bed in October Googling “gift ideas for my sister” when they should absolutely be sleeping.
By November? The stores that prepared early are already collecting sales. The stores that didn’t are frantically trying to figure out how to add a countdown timer at 11:47 PM the night before Black Friday.
Do not be the second store.
And holiday shopping is no longer just about Black Friday weekend. Customers are shopping earlier, comparing more stores, buying from brands they’ve never purchased from before, and expecting shipping dates, discounts and gift options to be VERY easy to figure out.
So if you’re wondering how to prepare your Shopify store for Christmas, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the rest of the holiday shopping season, this is where I’d start.
We’re covering the boring-but-important stuff, the conversion stuff, and yes… the cute stuff too.
Because your store should be ready to sell and look good doing it. 🎄
IN THIS ARTICLE
How Early Should You Prepare Your Shopify Store for the Holidays?
Ideally, start preparing your Shopify store 8 to 10 weeks before your biggest holiday sales period.
For most businesses, that means September or early October is a good time to start planning your holiday promotions, inventory, gift collections, shipping deadlines and storefront updates.
That does NOT mean your homepage needs snowflakes in September.
Please don’t do that. 😂
It means the behind-the-scenes work should already be happening so you’re not trying to build your entire holiday strategy the week of Black Friday.
1. Plan Your Holiday Sales and Important Dates FIRST
Before we touch the cute stuff, we need a plan…
I know. Rude.
But before you redesign a banner or build a Christmas collection, decide what you’re actually doing for the holidays.
Figure out your Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale dates, Christmas shipping cutoff, personalized-product cutoff, holiday launches, email promotions, free shipping offers and any VIP or early-access dates.
Put all of it on a calendar.
This also makes it much easier to schedule your website changes ahead of time instead of waking up at midnight to swap a banner.
QUICK TIP: Don’t build your entire holiday strategy around one weekend. Holiday shopping starts earlier than it used to, so give customers reasons to shop before Black Friday and reasons to come back afterward.
2. Create Holiday Gift Collections That Make Shopping Stupidly Easy
Holiday shoppers don’t always know exactly what they’re looking for.
Sometimes they’re shopping with the extremely helpful criteria of:
“Something cute for my sister. Maybe under $50. She likes… things?”
Help them out.
Create collections based on how your customers actually shop for gifts.
Think Gifts Under $25, Gifts Under $50, Stocking Stuffers, Gifts for Her, Gifts for Him, Personalized Gifts, Teacher Gifts, Best Sellers or whatever makes sense for your products.
And once you’ve created them, don’t bury them three clicks deep in your navigation.
Give holiday shopping a visible spot in your menu.
If your theme supports a mega menu with promotional images, even better. A photo of your best-selling stocking stuffers is going to catch someone’s attention much faster than a tiny text link hiding under “Shop.”
THEME TIP: Promo-image mega menus are available in quite a few of my Shopify themes, which makes it easy to visually feature seasonal collections without installing another navigation app.
3. Put Your Holiday Shipping Deadline Somewhere People Can Actually SEE It
Please do not hide your Christmas shipping deadline on page 17 of your FAQ and expect shoppers to go hunting for it.
They won’t.
Your holiday shipping cutoff should be painfully easy to find.
This is where a rotating announcement bar earns its keep.
Instead of:
Holiday shipping is here!
Give customers information they can actually use:
• Order by December 15 for Christmas delivery 🎄
• Free shipping on orders $75+
• Holiday Sale: 20% off through Sunday
If your announcement bar rotates between multiple messages, even better. You can show your shipping cutoff, current promotion and free shipping offer without turning the top of your website into Times Square.
THEME TIP: Rotating announcement bars are one of the conversion features available in my Shopify themes.
4. Give Your Homepage a Holiday Refresh
You do not need to turn your entire website red and green.
Your brand is still your brand in December.
Instead, give your existing brand a holiday version.
Swap your hero image, update the headline, feature your holiday collections and move your best seasonal products closer to the top of the page.
This is also a perfect place for a Featured Collection section.
Put your best sellers, holiday favorites or Gifts Under $50 right on the homepage so customers can start shopping immediately.
And if you have Quick Add? Even better.
Someone can spot the candle they’re buying for their coworker, add it to their cart and keep shopping without bouncing back and forth between product pages.
Less clicking. More shopping…
We like that.
THEME TIP: My themes include Featured Collection sections with slider or static layouts plus Hover Quick Add on desktop.
5. Use a Countdown Timer for REAL Urgency
Countdown timers can be incredibly effective during the holidays.
They can also be incredibly annoying when they’re counting down to absolutely nothing.
Use yours for a real deadline:
- Black Friday sale ending.
- Cyber Monday offer expiring.
- Holiday collection launching.
- Christmas shipping cutoff approaching.
That’s useful urgency!
“Order within 02 days : 14 hours : 32 minutes for Christmas delivery” gives someone an actual reason to stop thinking about it and order.
Set your countdown up before the promotion starts, test it on desktop AND mobile, and make sure you know what happens when it reaches zero.
The night before Black Friday is not the moment to discover your timer says:
-00 : -01 : -14
Cute.
THEME TIP: Countdown launch timers are available in my themes, with upgraded countdown options available in select Pro themes.

6. Set Up Your Holiday Discounts BEFORE You Need Them
If you’re planning a Black Friday, Cyber Monday or holiday sale, do not wait until launch day to create your discounts.
Decide whether you’re using an automatic discount, coupon code, free shipping offer, bundle promotion or a combination that Shopify allows.
Then test it.
Actually add products to your cart.
Hit the minimum spend.
Use the coupon.
Check the sale price.
Check your shipping.
Go through checkout.
Do the exact things your customer is going to do.
Do not discover that your 20% OFF EVERYTHING promotion excludes your best seller because Susan from Ohio emails you about it at 5:42 AM on Black Friday.
Susan will find it.
Can You Schedule Shopify Holiday Sales in Advance?
Yes, parts of your holiday promotions can be prepared ahead of time, but exactly what you can schedule depends on the promotion and the Shopify features or apps you’re using.
At minimum, create your discounts, promotional graphics, announcement messages, collections and email campaigns before launch day. If your theme or apps include scheduling controls, use them for banners, badges or promotional content so you’re not manually changing your store at midnight.
SAVE THIS: Keep a simple holiday launch checklist with every item that needs to go live, change or disappear when the sale begins and ends.
7. Make Free Shipping Work Harder for You
One of my favorite tiny conversion features is ridiculously simple:
You’re $12 away from free shipping.
Suddenly that $12 candle looks awfully tempting.
A free shipping progress bar shows customers exactly how close they are to earning free shipping and gives them a reason to add another product instead of checking out immediately.
And during the holidays? They’re probably shopping for multiple people anyway.
Even better, don’t wait until they’re already in the cart to tell them.
If your store supports it, show the free shipping goal on the product page and then update their progress inside the cart drawer.
Now the customer knows about the offer while they’re shopping and gets a little reminder once they’re almost there.
THEME TIP: Most of my themes include a Free Shipping Progress Bar in the cart. I have a few themes that also include a separate product-page shipping bar.
Tiny feature. Very useful job.
8. Increase Holiday Order Value With Upsells and Bundles
Your customer came for Mom’s gift.
Then she remembered her sister.
Then her coworker.
Then somehow three things for herself ended up in the cart.
This is our moment.
Use relevant product recommendations, bundles and “You might also love…” sections to make the next purchase obvious.
Selling a candle? Show the matching room spray.
Selling earrings? Show the necklace.
Selling personalized tumblers? Show the matching tote.
You can also use your cart for one last helpful recommendation.
You’re $14 away from free shipping. Add this?
That’s very different from throwing six random products at someone and yelling BUY MORE THINGS.
A good upsell should make your customer think:
“Oh wait… yes. I DO need that.”
THEME TIP: Product upsells and bundles are available in my themes, with additional cart upsells included in select Pro themes.
9. Make Personalized Gifts Easy to Order
If you sell personalized products, the holidays are NOT the time for:
“Please email your personalization after ordering.”
Nope.
Let customers enter names, initials, dates, colors or messages directly on the product page whenever possible.
Every unnecessary step between:
I want this → I bought this
is another opportunity for someone to disappear.
Your personalization options should also be crystal clear for YOU when the order arrives. There is nothing festive about emailing 37 customers because you don’t know what font they wanted.
And don’t forget to establish a separate Christmas cutoff for personalized products if they require additional processing time.
THEME TIP: Product personalization fields are included in my themes, with expanded text boxes, radio buttons and dropdown options available in select Pro themes.
10. Put Reviews Where First-Time Holiday Shoppers Can Find Them
Holiday traffic brings people who have never heard of your business.
They’re looking at your product.
Then your price.
Then your shipping.
And somewhere in their brain they’re asking:
“Is this store legit?”
Your reviews help answer that question.
Make customer reviews and testimonials easy to find on your product pages and throughout your storefront.
Don’t make someone scroll to the Earth’s core to find proof that other humans have successfully ordered from you.
During the holidays, trust needs to happen FAST.
THEME TIP: My themes include a Top Reviews Slider, with additional upgraded testimonial layouts available in select Pro themes.
11. Make Your Holiday Coupon Code Impossible to Forget
If you’re promoting a holiday coupon code, make it ridiculously easy to use.
Your customer should not have to memorize:
MERRYHOLIDAY20 while shopping, then reach checkout and think:
“Wait… was it HOLIDAY20? MERRY20? MERRYHOLIDAY? Oh whatever.”
A tap-to-copy coupon section solves that.
Tap.
Copy.
Shop.
Done.
It’s a tiny bit of friction removed from the buying process, and holiday shopping has enough friction already.
THEME TIP: Yep, there’s a tap-to-copy Coupon Code Section in quite a few of my Shopify themes too…
I’m sensing a pattern here. 👀
12. Add a Wishlist BEFORE Everyone Starts Making Christmas Lists
I think wishlists are criminally underrated for holiday shopping.
Someone loves a product but isn’t ready to buy it?
Save it.
Someone wants to send their husband a very subtle list of six things they definitely wouldn’t mind finding under the tree?
Share it.
Someone browses your store in October and comes back on Black Friday ready to buy?
Their favorites are already waiting.
A wishlist keeps that shopping intent connected to your store instead of relying on someone to remember what they saw three weeks ago.
And during gift-shopping season, that’s kind of a big deal.
THEME TIP: A lot of my themes come with a built-in Shopify Wishlist, so customers can save the products they’re eyeing without another wishlist app.
13. Use Live Inventory to Create REAL Scarcity
You don’t need fake urgency during the holidays.
Holiday inventory will happily create enough real urgency for you.
If you only have four of your best-selling gift set left, let customers know.
Only 4 left in stock
is useful information.
It helps someone decide whether they can come back tomorrow or whether this is a “maybe I should grab that now” situation.
That’s very different from fake countdowns and made-up scarcity.
THEME TIP: Live Inventory Status is another feature available in my themes.
No screaming.
No flashing red BUY NOW!!!
Just useful information doing its job.

14. Start Building Your Holiday Email List BEFORE Black Friday
Not everyone who visits your store in October is ready to buy in October.
That’s okay.
Give them a reason to stay connected.
A simple email popup could offer:
- Want first dibs on our Black Friday sale?
- Join the list for early holiday access.
- Get first access to our holiday collection.
Now when your promotion actually begins, you aren’t starting from zero.
You already have a group of people who raised their hands and said:
“Yep. I’m interested.”
Then your holiday email plan can include early access, sale launch, last chance, shipping deadline and a final gift-card push.
THEME TIP: Email popups are available in my Pro themes.
15. Check Your ENTIRE Store on Your Phone
Please do not skip this one!
Pull out your phone and shop your own website.
Not as the business owner… As a customer.
Can you read your announcement bar?
Does your hero text fit?
Can you find Gifts Under $50?
Does your mega menu make sense?
Can you select variants without wanting to throw your phone?
Can you personalize the product?
Can you see reviews?
Can you add something to your wishlist?
Does Quick Add actually work?
Can you open and close the cart easily?
Can you get through checkout without something weird happening?
Your desktop website can be absolutely gorgeous, but if shopping on your phone feels like an obstacle course, you have a problem.
16. Prepare for the Orders You’re Trying So Hard to Get
We spend SO much time talking about getting holiday sales that sometimes we forget what happens after someone buys.
You have to actually ship the thing. 😂
Before your promotions begin, check your inventory levels, packaging supplies, processing times, shipping setup and fulfillment workflow.
Make sure sold-out products are handled properly.
Make sure your return and shipping policies reflect your actual holiday timelines.
Make sure you know what happens if your best seller suddenly sells 200 units instead of 20.
And if your inventory is running low, make that information visible on the product page.
More sales are wonderful.
More sales that you are completely unprepared to fulfill?
Less wonderful.
17. Make Your Cart Work for You
Your cart should not just be the sad little holding area between shopping and checkout.
During the holidays, it can be doing some work too.
A good slide-out cart can keep customers on the page they’re shopping, show their free shipping progress, recommend another relevant product and make checkout ridiculously easy to find.
That’s especially helpful when someone is shopping for five different people and bouncing around your store.
THEME TIP: Slide-Out Cart Drawers and Free Shipping Progress Bars are available in my themes, with cart upsells included in select Pro themes.
18. And NOW We Can Make It Cute
Okay.
We handled shipping.
Inventory.
Discounts.
Mobile.
Collections.
Checkout.
NOW we can play. 😂
Holiday shopping should feel fun.
A scrolling holiday message, animated divider, subtle confetti or falling snow can make your store feel festive without redesigning your entire brand around Christmas.
For example:
FREE SHIPPING ✦ HOLIDAY ORDERS CLOSE DECEMBER 15 ✦ 20% OFF THIS WEEKEND ✦
Or add a subtle falling snow effect to a holiday launch.
Cute? Yes.
Necessary for your holiday strategy?
No.
And that’s why we’re doing it after the important stuff.
THEME TIP: Some of my themes include animated dividers and scrolling text marquees, falling effects with snow, stars, hearts or flowers plus additional animated sections.
And honestly?
Once your store is actually ready to convert…
then you have my permission to add the snowflakes.

Your Shopify Theme Should Be Helping You Sell, Too
If you just read this list thinking:
“Okay… but my theme doesn’t actually DO half of this.”
That’s kind of the point.
You shouldn’t need 11 different apps just to get your Shopify store holiday-ready.
My Shopify themes are built with conversion-focused features like wishlists, countdown timers, free shipping progress bars, product upsells, personalization fields, rotating announcement bars, promo-image mega menus, Quick Add, live inventory and more.
Select Pro themes include even more, including email popups, cart upsells, upgraded personalization, shoppable blog posts, advanced countdown sections and those very important falling snowflakes we finally earned.
So instead of spending November duct-taping apps onto your store, you can spend it doing something slightly more important.
Selling.
FAQs: About Preparing Your Shopify Store for the Holidays
Start preparing your Shopify store about 8 to 10 weeks before your biggest holiday sales period. For many businesses, September or early October is a good time to start preparing inventory, gift collections, promotions, shipping deadlines and storefront updates so everything is ready before Black Friday and Christmas shopping picks up.
At minimum, update your homepage, holiday gift collections, navigation, announcement bar, shipping deadlines, promotions and seasonal messaging. You should also check reviews, personalization options, gift options, inventory, mobile usability, cart experience, shipping settings and checkout before holiday traffic increases.
Make holiday shopping easier. Create gift-specific collections, clearly communicate shipping deadlines, show customer reviews, offer relevant product recommendations, promote a free shipping threshold and remove unnecessary steps from the buying process. Features like wishlists, Quick Add, personalization and cart upsells can also make it easier for holiday shoppers to find and purchase multiple gifts.
Prepare your discounts ahead of time, build your sale collections, update promotional graphics, check inventory, test your website on mobile and run through the complete checkout process. You should also decide exactly when your promotion starts and ends so your announcement bars, countdown timers, emails and other promotional content are ready before launch.
You can prepare many parts of a Shopify holiday promotion ahead of time, including discounts, collections, emails and promotional content. Exactly what can be automatically scheduled depends on your Shopify setup, plan, theme and apps. Create a launch checklist for any banners, badges, discounts or website content that needs to change when your promotion starts or ends.
Useful holiday ecommerce features include rotating announcement bars, countdown timers, wishlists, free shipping progress bars, product recommendations, personalization fields, Quick Add, live inventory, customer reviews and an easy-to-use cart. The best features are the ones that reduce shopping friction, answer customer questions, create legitimate urgency or help customers discover additional gifts.
